Isn’t hiring an editor cheating?
No! Think of all the books sitting on all the shelves you’ve ever seen. Guess what? They’ve all had an editor if not editors. Editing is part of the writing and publication process. At the end of the day, even with an editors’ help, you’re the author, because it’s your work and your words.

Can’t I just do this myself?
Of course! But are you? Will you? If you’ve been sitting on publications because they’re “almost there”, you’re completely sick of working on them, or you just don’t have the time, headspace, or confidence to actually finish and submit? Yes? Then it’s probably time to hire someone else to have a look.

Why should I hire an editor?
Well, you can probably clean your own house, make your own meals, file your own taxes, cut your own hair, and hem your own pants, but I bet you get others to do some or all of these, even if only once in a while.

And why do you hire them? Because sometimes it’s not worth your time, money, bother, aggravation, or energy to do it yourself. Because they’re all service providers, just like an editor, and we have the time, skill, and expertise to get the job done.

Do details really matter that much?
Yes! If your formatting or references are incorrect, you’ll likely get a “revise and submit”. If you’ve got an 85,000 word thesis and it’s full of grammatical, typographic, or formatting errors, you’re examiners are likely to get distracted and miss what you’re actually trying to say. If you’ve sent a sales email to your subscribers and the links aren’t working, you’ve likely lost customers and sales. At this level of the game, details matter.
